WHAT IS PRENATAL MASSAGE: We adapt our Integrative Massage to meet the needs of the pregnant body. Using special cushions, pillows and an articulating massage table we accommodate for pregnancy safely and comfortably. We love working with pregnant women and provide a safe nurturing atmosphere for the mother-to-be to relax and achieve greater health for herself and her baby. Our therapists are specifically trained in prenatal and can work with women at all stages of pregnancy and even with some prenatal complications. |
Some studies are showing that women who receive regular massage during pregnancy have shorter easier labor, and healthier babies. And prenatal massage can improve mood and ease anxiety. In an article published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology it was noted that "Only the massage therapy group, however, reported reduced anxiety, improved mood, better sleep and less back pain by the last day of the study. In addition, urinary stress hormone levels (norepinephrine) decreased for the massage therapy group and the women had fewer complications during labor and their infants had fewer postnatal complications (e.g., less prematurity)."
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PRENATAL MASSAGE:
|
|
"While pregnant I have been seeing Claire for prenatal massage. I have tried many different therapists in Flagstaff for prenatal massage, and in my experience, Claire is the BEST. She is the only practitioner I have seen while pregnant that leaves me feeling no pain post-appointment. In the past, prenatal massage has made me feel unfulfilled and unrelieved since a face-down position isn't an option, but with Claire, I have finally felt pain relief with massage." - Courtney S.
CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR PRENATAL MASSAGE:

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH PRENATAL MASSAGE:
- During your first session expect a thorough consultation during which the therapists may ask for details about issues you are having in your body. This is an opportunity for you to communicate any questions, concerns, or requests you may have and ask for specific areas of focus or any special accommodations you may need.
- You will need to undress for the massage. You can leave underwear on if you feel more comfortable. The therapist will step out after your consultation and allow you time to undress, knocking upon return to make sure you are ready. You will be covered with a sheet and blanket and the therapist will only undrape the area they are working on. Our therapists are very skilled at appropriate draping.
- Your therapist will use a special cushioning system that allows you to lie prone until about the 18th week of your pregnancy. After that the side lying position is safest. When you are supine after your 20th week your therapists will use either our articulating hydraulic table to elevate your torso and legs or a wedge and bolster.
- During your session your therapist will ask about your comfort and whether the pressure is appropriate. Please make sure to communicate clearly about this. Our feelings don't get hurt if you ask for an adjustment in the pressure. We may be the experts at massage but you are the expert on your body, so let us know if something doesn't feel right. And if anything on the table or the temperature needs to be adjusted let us know about that too. We want you to have the best experience possible.
- Your therapist will use a variety of techniques to help both with relaxation and with manipulation of soft tissue. Again communication is key to getting exactly what you want and need from your session.
- Your therapist may guide you through some breathing techniques to help you relax or help you let go in a certain tension area. Participate as fully as you can with these techniques.
- Your therapist will use oil for the massage. This is the best way to glide over the skin without pulling. Our oil does contain almond oil so if you are allergic to nuts let us know. With pregnancy, the only safe aromatherapy blend we offer is the Simply Soothing blend and you can opt to use it or just use unscented if you prefer. She/he also may use tools or warm towels.
